Hot Flashes and Summer Heat: Tools to Reach For That Actually Help

I got lucky with hot flashes. HRT has kept mine at bay, which means I get to sit outside the misery instead of inside it — but it also means I spent a while feeling like a fraud every time someone asked me what actually helps with hot flashes and summer heat, because my honest answer was “I don’t really know, mine are managed.”
So I started asking. I read the unpaid reviews, I talked to friends who are white-knuckling this summer, and I went looking for the things women are talking about intensely- the reviews that are testimonials not marketing.
This is a list of things that keep coming up from women who are actually living this and some that I’ve used myself.
Here’s what women are fiercely loyal to this summer:
Hot Flashes and Summer Heat- What Works for the Sleeping Situation

Cooling sheets — I went looking for reviews and found something closer to religious conviction. Women say they can’t sleep anywhere else now, that they’ve bought a second set because they refuse to go back to regular sheets even for one night away from home. The most highly rated brands are Cozy Earth, Luxome, Evercool by Rest and Quince.
The BedJet — This one has the most loyal fan base I’ve run into in this whole search. The BedJet provides rapid air-based cooling and sweat drying comfort right in your bed. And apparently once you’ve slept temperature-controlled, you will never go back. Everyone LOVES the BedJet and it is especially viral among women dealing with hot flashes. Worth mentioning it has free shipping, free returns for 60 days and a 2 year warranty when purchased through the retailers site, which is really the best way to see it in action and get the full effect of what the BedJet can do for women suffering from night sweats and hot flashes.
*Keep in mind, many of these products are also HSA/FSA eligible as well.
Eberjey TENCEL pajamas — I love my Eberjey pajamas and I’ve had them for more years than I care to count. They hold up wash after wash, look great and the patented Tencel fabric is somehow cool while still providing the comfort level of your favorite sweats! And of course they look amazing so win-win. Other brands that make specific cooling pajamas are Soma’s Cool Nights, Cool Jams, and Lands End.

Ditching the top sheet for a lightweight cooling comforter — Europeans already know this but a lot of Americans don’t realize this exists as an option. It’s not a product so much as a permission slip — several women mentioned how much better they slept once they stopped trying to make a heavy, top sheet situation work for a body that’s already running its own furnace. There are also lightweight cooling comforters and this one was very highly rated.
What Works for Everywhere Else
Embr Wave Cooling Bracelet — This is the coolest wearable tech that is absolutely working wonders for women. It also has a very devoted following. Women don’t just say it helps — they say things like “This device changed my miserable hot flashing life!” I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve read enough reviews using the word “obsessed” that I’d definitely get one of these if I was struggling with hot flashes.

A handheld or neck fan — Unglamorous, inexpensive, entirely useful, and the thing women tell me they now keeps in their bag, their car, and their nightstand — three separate fans, because being caught without one apparently isn’t an option anymore. This one on Amazon is sleek enough to wear without LOOKING like a regular fan.
Cooling bra inserts — This is the one I didn’t know existed, but makes a heck of a lot of sense. Small, inexpensive, and slipped under a bra for on-the-spot relief in the exact spot a hot flash tends to start. The kind of thing you wish someone had told you about years ago. This $20 tool for your arsenal can be purchased from Joylux, Ulta and Amazon.
A cooling face mist — Doubles as a beauty step and a rescue tool, which is probably why it has such a loyal following in this age group specifically. Women describe always keeping one one in their bag. The most talked about ones specifically from women dealing with hot flashes are from Stripes and Peter Thomas Roth.
Cornbread Hemp THC Seltzer — Less an in-the-moment fix, more a cool evening ritual alternative. Several women mentioned reaching for THC cold seltzer over ice instead of a glass of wine to wind down — a small swap that seems to matter more than you’d think. This brand has the highest quality standards .
I got lucky this summer — HRT means I mostly on the sidelines with this particular issue. But I know what it’s like to feel like your own body took off in it’s own wild direction, and I hope something on this list makes that a little easier for you.
If you’ve found something that’s earned a spot in your own rotation — something you’d tell a friend about, — I’d love to hear it. Let me know in the comments and tell me what’s actually working for you this summer.
