“How to Set a Beautiful Holiday Table: Simple Ideas and Tips”

Autumn has fully settled on the island, bringing chilly but mild weather so far. The sprawling tree that shades the terrace has transformed into a pretty pale yellow, its leaves falling to the ground as I sit here typing this post. With the terrace area slowly being covered in a blanket of yellow, I’m reminded that Thanksgiving is around the corner in America. I thought it might be nice to write out some of my simple tips on how to set a beautiful Holiday table.

Take it Outside

Not everyone can do this, I know—but if you can, it makes things so much simpler! A porch, a quiet corner of the yard, or a patio with a lovely backdrop can instantly elevate your gathering. The fresh air, extra space, and natural surroundings create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere for everyone. Whether you’re setting one large table or a collection of smaller ones, the added room to move around is a game-changer for both comfort and conversation. These tips do work for indoors or out.

Use Side Tables

Side tables are your secret weapon when hosting! If you are hosting outdoors, bring out a few, or get creative with what’s already available—garden benches, potting tables, or even sturdy crates can work. Use them to set up a drink station, a spot for appetizers, or even a buffet-style meal. If desserts are your grand finale, why not dedicate an entire table to them? It seems there’s always a need for extra space, and having these little helpers on hand makes everything feel more organized and effortless.

Use Natural Fabrics and Textured Layers

Draping your tables in natural fabrics is where the magic begins. Linen tablecloths, family heirloom napkins, or even a well-loved quilt can instantly make your table feel warm and inviting. If you’re lucky enough to have a beautiful wooden table, consider skipping the tablecloth and opting for rustic, woven placemats instead.

Chilly weather? Lean into it! Use your outdoor fireplace if you have one, or add cozy layers to your chairs and benches—blankets, pillows, and (my favorite!) sheepskin throws. There’s something about these textures that not only keeps your guests warm but adds a touch of elegance and charm to the setting.

Use Mismatched Table and Glass Ware

Don’t stress about having everything match perfectly. Some of the most beautiful tables come together with a mix of pieces. The trick? Stick to a color scheme to tie it all together. For example, I love using our old brown depression glassware (a wedding gift from Troy’s grandmother) alongside textured wine glasses.

For simplicity, I like to keep place settings minimal: one plate, with a neatly folded napkin on top. A little detail, like a sprig of pine, a vibrant autumn leaf, or a bit of twine tied around the napkin, adds a festive touch without going overboard.

Candles and Fairy Lights

You can never have too many candles, in my opinion! They’re an inexpensive way to add a soft, welcoming glow to your holiday table. I love mixing tea lights in mismatched glass holders with a few tall, tapered candles running down the center of the table. Large pillar candles in glass cylinders are perfect for side tables or around the dining area, creating a warm, serene ambiance.

And let’s not forget fairy lights! Battery-operated strands are made for gatherings. Drape them over tree branches, weave them through wreaths, or even wrap them loosely around your candles for a magical, twinkling effect. Create your own light fixture by wrapping them around a wreath and then suspending it horizontally from some pretty ribbon. Again, you can use these over and over and you may like the effect so much that you leave them up year around.

Flowers and Natural Autumn Arrangements

Never underestimate the elegance of a bouquet of flowers for your table. You can go and forage for lovely fall branches to arrange yourself or pick up a bouquet from the florist that matches your setting. Either of these will add an organic beauty to your table that really helps to set a beautiful holiday table.
