Mid Century Modern on a Budget

So, before we move from this house, I thought I’d share how I decorated a very traditional mountain-style home, with a mid-century modern twist. We have lived in a lot of cabin-y mountain homes (here and here) over the last few years. And while they are breathtakingly beautiful, the dark wood and “log cabin” style decor does wear on me after a bit. My heart loves clean, modern spaces that are still warm and inviting.

The house we are currently in has some of the same mountain style features like brown walls, wood trim, rock fireplaces, etc. Since we are leasing, I was limited to the things that I could change, but I really longed for something with a slightly more modern twist and a more minimalist feel. I also didn’t want to drop a bunch of $$ decorating a rental, so all of these changes are very budget-conscious and all of the items are linked so you can shop this post if you’re into mid-century modern!.

Our bedroom seemed like the most logical place to start. We actually needed a new mattress so I thought I’d try out the newer style Bed-in- a-box where the company delivers it to your door! I read SO many reviews on these things and finally pulled the plug and y’all- one of the best budget purchases I’ve ever made! The mattress arrived at our door in a box, and you just follow the instructions and it is one of the best mattresses ever. One of the things I love the most about it is that you can’t feel your partner moving around on the other side of the bed! We both love it and we are getting excellent sleep with no soreness anywhere. Here is the link to the exact one we have > ZINUS MATTRESS. I also got the bed frame and the $20 Amazon sheets, all in the same order and I am so pleased with all of them.

This room is filled with floor to ceiling windows. I love all the light, but I wanted to make things brighter! The brown walls, dark wood trim, blinds, and neutral carpet drain my soul, lol. I got these lightweight, light filtering curtains for a total steal. I wasn’t in love with the way they looked when placed on the curtain rods that were already on the wall, so I got little black clip-on curtain rings (pack of 40 for under $12!) and they made all the difference!

These sunny windows have been a great spot for my menagerie of succulents.

I mixed inexpensive geometric patterned pillows with pillows that I already owned. And if we were going to be here longer, I would definitely get a large geometric patterned black and white rug for under the bed. (I love these because you can fold them up and throw them in the washer!) The nightstands were $25 from Home Goods but I’ve linked some great budget styles from Amazon. The dresser was used and originally had large, round, wooden drawer pulls and a basic mirror attached. I switched out the drawer pulls, detached the mirror and added this wall mirror instead. I also had every intention of getting a bundle of cut birch logs to go on top of the fireplace (not shown but there’s a fireplace in the far left corner of the above photo) but never got around to it.

Another little spot that I enjoyed styling in this house was this little makeshift bar cart area. Such a simple thing to add and if you don’t drink alcohol, you could do a tea and coffee cart or something similar. The little table has been in so many houses and performed so many functions! If we move to the apartment next, it will be holding our TV!

I hope that you guys are all hanging in there and doing what is necessary to just…. stay home. Like everyone else on the planet, I’ll be glad for things to settle a bit. I’ll let you know about our housing situation soon- we will either be moving or not in April! I hope that you enjoyed seeing how I did this minimalist, mid-century modern decor in a rental house and on a budget!

Thank you for Pinning this post!

Thank you yes! You can order with confidence! They are so good- we’ve had ours for almost a year now and it’s still doing great! Such a bargain over regular mattresses too.
