A while back I tried the Sirtfood Diet. You can read part 1 HERE.While this particular diet didn’t get a lot of attention here in the US, it has had a moment in the UK. The science behind this diet was really intriguing, looking at the bodies reactions on a cellular level. I love a good plan to get me going again toward a healthy living, and when I heard that coffee, red wine and dark chocolate were ALLOWED on this diet- I was all about it!

In a nutshell, the diet is based on the idea that when you fast or exercise, you switch on your sirtuin genes, which enable you to lose weight. According to the book, sirtfoods (foods with large amounts of sirtuins in them) are capable of mimicking the effects of the aforementioned beneficial stressors and can actually activate our sirtuin genes as well! This is all explained in much more detail in the book, but: “Eat my way lean?” I am SO IN.

Spoiler alert: It works.

I did lose 5 lbs on the diet and they’ve stayed gone. If you need to shift some weight rather quickly, I definitely recommend giving this a try! Aside from the first week, this is definitely more of a “lifestyle”  nutrition plan. It isn’t at all extreme and aside from Phase 1, this is a “diet of inclusion”, which is something I can definitely get behind!



Phase 1

Days 1-3, I consumed 3 of the sirtfood green juices a day and then had an evening meal prepared from one of the recipes in the book.

The juices are really good and easy to drink. I never really got hungry until around 2 or 3 each day. For me, thats when I would have a cup of mint tea and the dark chocolate that is allowed on the diet. I was really looking forward to dinner on those days! I definitely don’t recommend exercising for these first 3 days. Just chill and stick with the plan.

The meals in this diet are really, really good. I didn’t have one bad meal the whole time! If you don’t like food preparation and cooking, then this might not be the thing for you, but I like to cook and I served these meals to my family as well and they were a hit.

On days 4-7  I had 2 green juices and 2 meals from the Sirtfoods diet. I really wasn’t hungry at all on these days . I did drink close to a gallon of water a day.

One of the things I noticed was that I began to sleep really well after day 2, so that was an unexpected benefit! My mind seem clear and more alert and except for some hunger the first three days just before dinner, I felt great! By day 7 I also noticed my weight loss as well as a nice glow to my skin.

Phase 2

I had 1 green juice a day and 3 meals from the book plus an optional snack. In this point of the diet, its really about adding more sirtuin-rich foods into your day…..thats it. Just eating the way you want but with a Sirtfood twist.

The only drawback that I could find, is that I had trouble finding some of the buckwheat products here in our small town. I really enjoyed every recipe that I tried and the cookbook is a keeper for me. The recipes are delicious, healthy and packed with flavor. I’ve tried to stick with the green juice in the morning, I do feel the effects of that juice and I can tell a difference in my energy levels on the days that I don’t juice. I also printed out a list of the top 20 sirtfoods and keep it in my pantry. The mint tea and a square of dark chocolate is a daily occurrence for me now. 🙂

What you need:

If you want to give this diet a try you will need to get the book, either hard back or kindle version.

You will need a juicer (This won’t work with a blender). This is the one I have and I love it, because it’s a bit more compact, and fits in my cabinet without taking up counter space. It works great for me!

It isn’t necessary but I also highly recommend the additional Sirtfood Diet Recipe Book for more recipe variety The recipes are great and I really LOVE finding new and interesting ways to prepare delicious meals!

    I had not heard of this diet before. Since I love green juices, this might be exactly what I’ve been looking for!
