Small Kitchen in the Stone Villa
There’s something heartwarming about this small kitchen in the stone villa. Actually, I kind of have a thing for small kitchens. For some reason, the houses we’ve been in the longest, have had them and I’ve really grown to prefer the smaller space. For the day to day, I find them so comfortable- everything is within arms reach and they’re easy to clean. They can sometimes be challenging for larger gatherings, but really it just takes a little more planning ahead.
As Thanksgiving approaches for my US family and friends I thought it would be a nice time to “tour” the small kitchen in the stone villa.

There’s a rustic warmth to the entire villa and the kitchen is no different. It has a spot for everything that is necessary, as well as a few things that just make me happy. I love the colored stone tiles that are different from the rest of the house and the cabinetry and terracotta tiles are a nod to Tuscan styling.
Small Kitchen Organization
There are only 5 cabinets and I’ve organized them this way:
- Pantry
- Plates, bowls and glass ware
- Pots, Pans, Mixing Bowls, food storage containers
- Under Sink : cleaning supplies, garbage bags, dust pan, recycling bins
- Small appliances and miscellaneous.
There are 3 drawers and I’ve organized them this way:
- Silverware and kitchen knives
- Tea towels, dish towels, dish drying pads, oven mitts
- Foils, wraps, baking paper, bread baskets & miscellaneous
There’s an additional 4 small, shallow drawers that hold things like tea, baking supplies, candles, etc.

The dishwasher is hidden and I love that it doesn’t detract from the old world charm of the rest of the kitchen. There is no microwave. I suppose we could put one on the refrigerator, but I honestly don’t miss it. I only used a microwave for reheating leftovers and occasionally for defrosting things.
The refrigerator is new and while it’s small by US standards it’s very common here. The same with the oven and stove top. We don’t stock up with huge grocery hauls any more and find our selves just getting what we need for the next couple of days. Everything is very fresh, so this is the best way and no large pantry is necessary.

My favorite spot is the kitchen window. It’s a bright spot that looks out to the little garden beside the terrace. I love that there’s enough space for keeping herbs handy for cooking. The large, shallow sink is made of stone from near the house. I’m finding that there’s something about real stone that has an indestructible, secure quality about it. I’m still figuring out how I’d like to set up things around the sink area.
This was the setup I had at our Virginia house and I’d like to do something similar here. It’s pretty, but simple and functional.

The exact dispensers, brushes and riser I used can be found here. Such a simple thing, but really helps to keep the sink area tidy.
Small kitchen/Cozy kitchen
I love cooking, and there’s something especially nice about cooking in this cozy kitchen. Preparing a nourishing meal with the freshest ingredients feels so satisfying to me. Before diving into cooking dinner, I like to light a candle and put on a favorite playlist (I shared the Autumn one I’m loving here). Troy and I usually enjoy a little aperitivo—maybe a caprese salad, a simple board of cheeses, cured meats, and olives, or just some good sourdough with olive oil, salt, and pepper. It’s the perfect start to a relaxed evening in and I highly recommend it.

Do You Like Small Kitchens?
Do you like them or does the very thought of one make you claustrophobic? If our 13 moves haven’t made it obvious, I’m naturally pretty adaptable. But out of all the kitchens I’ve had, small ones have been my favorite.

Wonderful post!! And love the small kitchen. It really is the best for me as well, and I find it actually is less likely to clutter because you are forced to be more considerate of what you have and the available space. Really love your kitchen, it seems like a truly happy place, as every kitchen should be!
I would love to do what you and your husband have done—move to a small village (my dream is Italy) and live in a stone cottage overlooking the countryside or the Mediterranean Sea. I would really love a blog about what has prompted you to move here and why you have moved many times (and always to places that seem so unique from the last place.) And I love learning about how you adapt and rebuild yourself at each location. Please keep sharing your daily adventures, the beauty of your home (each nook!) and of course, your skincare! (Please include some pictures of Winston—I adore him). Erin (Collecting Daisies on Insta)
I adore your small kitchen, it is perfect! And I’d love to see more pictures of the villa too. I enjoy reading about your new, slower way of life, it seems so peaceful.
