How to Stay Chic and Comfortable in Summer Heat Over 50

We’ve all been there — trying to navigate summer heat over 50. You’re at an outdoor wedding, or a backyard party in the heat of summer, and the makeup you loved when you left the house has somehow slid off your face in undignified little beads. The hair you styled this morning is a frizzy mess by noon, and your dress is sticking to the back of your legs every time you move. You know the feeling: summer wilt.
After several summers living on an island in the Adriatic Sea, I picked up a few things — partly from the women who live there, partly from the ones who fly in every year on holiday. I watched them move through real heat, from early market mornings to late nights at a waterside club, without ever looking like they’d wilted. What I noticed is that it’s not about fighting the heat. It’s about a few specific choices that turn “wilted and miserable” into “chic and effortless.” Here’s what works.
What She’s Actually Wearing
Linen is the non-negotiable fabric — dresses, pants, sets, the breathable everything. You don’t have to break the bank on these everyday pieces- check Quince, Uniqlo and even H&M. If you are interested in investment linen pieces look at Eileen Fisher, Boden and the unmatched Frank and Eileen. You can check out some of my favorite summer linen pieces here. They mix and match effortlessly all summer long.
Brightly colored and patterned, flowy summer dresses in every length are the norm for the women who know a thing or two about living in the heat. These will take you everywhere in comfort and effortless style without all the fuss. Click here for ideas.
One caveat: the more worn linen is, the better it looks — so don’t fight the wrinkles too much. A small steamer helps for anything you actually need crisp.
The Hair Move
The chignon. Halfway through my first summer on the island, I realized why this was a game-changer. This nape-of-the-neck bun is humidity-proof and looks chic instantly. Use a nourishing hair oil from mid-shaft to the ends, and a tiny bit on your part to tame fly-aways. It’s a great style for hair claws or scarves, and it dresses up or down with endless possibilities. YouTube has thousands of chignon tutorials for every hair length — here’s a clear, beginner-friendly version to start with.

A Face That Survives the Summer Heat Over 50
Forget foundation and use a good blurring SPF. I recommend Supergoop Mineral Matte Screen. It blurs lines and imperfections while protecting skin from the sun, and it stays put. It’s a mineral sunscreen with a beautiful finish, goes on well over serums, and works especially well for mature skin.
And if you really need a full face of makeup in summer heat (and sometimes you do), be sure top it with Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray. It has a lovely matte finish and it absolutely holds everything exactly where you applied it even on the hottest day.
If you have lashes, but they are just straight and/or light, I highly recommend just getting a lash lift and tint at the start of summer. This quick, enjoyable salon treatment runs about $100, lasts several months, and makes your eyes stand out in that natural-but-better way.
If mascara is a must in summer heat, stick with tubing mascara — it stays on until you take it off. My long-standing favorite is L’Oréal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes. It does what it says, and it’s about $12 and comes off with warm water only.
Long-time readers know I’ve used Lashify for years — my go-to in summer is just adding their Water-Proof Sealer. It’s fast and it works beautifully. Use code MELISSASLASHES for 20% off.
The One No One Ever Told Me About
This year ThirdLove came up with an absolute game changer for women in their peri/menopause years. Third Love TempSync. The first intimates collection engineered to fight hot flashes — this line actively balances your body temperature before you get hot, working before you ever start to sweat. “Yes, please!” It’s soft, breathable, and effective. This is a real hidden gem for your summer arsenal.
A Few Other Details That Matter in Summer
A large straw tote. It looks chic and effortless, and it holds everything from towels to fruit to facial spritzes to the grandbaby’s toys. I’ve used this bag for three summers now, and I don’t know what I’d do without it.
Sunglasses in summer go without saying, but don’t overlook the chance to elevate any outfit with an elegant pair. Large, oversized frames and cat-eye looks are in again this year. I personally save designer frames for special occasions and wear Amazon frames almost every day.
And for everyday shoes that keep your feet cool and comfortable while still looking chic with most anything, I always reach for my Birkenstock sandals. Most women I saw were wearing some version of the newer one-strap buckle sandal. My own most-worn, most-loved pair is the Birkenstock Big Buckle Madrid. You simply cannot go wrong.

These are tips and tricks I saw used by women on the Adriatic who were staying chic in the summer heat over 50. It isn’t really about beating the heat — it’s about knowing how to get dressed for it.
I’d love to know: what’s your one non-negotiable for surviving summer heat over 50? Please tell me in the comments — I’m always looking for the next thing to add to my own summer kit.
