What to Wear to Holiday Parties?

I absolutely love picking out what to wear to holiday parties! Whether I’m hosting a party or a guest, it’s just such a perfect time to pull out all the stops and glam it up a bit!

What to wear to holiday parties! If you are over 40, heres a template to help you look elevated and stylish at any holiday party.

When trying to decide what to wear to holiday parties, I go to my closet and pull out the most sequined and glamorous pieces that I own- throw them all on the bed and begin crafting my outfits! If I can do this early in December, I can easily purchase any key pieces to complete my ensembles, but typically, since these pieces don’t get a ton of wear, I already have what I need in my closet. Always shop your closet first!

This year, we are in Colorado and while its beautiful and sunny most days in the winter, as soon as the sun drops behind the mountains, it’s COLD. You won’t find me in sequined shorts and tights or a strappy shift dress (even though I LOVE both of those looks) because I hate being cold. No-  I want to be comfortable and warm but still elevate my look for party season.

My answer was the statement coat.

You need a great statement coat in your wardrobe. It should be one that you truly love and that makes you feel amazing when you wear it. It can instantly dress up any outfit.

My go-to, warmest party outfit is a black cashmere turtleneck,(linked below) with faux leather pants (the exact ones I’m wearing are linked below- under $25!) and black suede booties. With this as my “canvas”, I can make this as dressy or as casual as I want. Throw on the statement coat over the top and you’ve got yourself a warm and winning combo for any holiday party! You could elevate this a lot more by adding loads of sparkle with jewelry and a glittery handbag or just keep it minimal as I’ve done here.

My other go-to for holiday parties is anything sequined. I’m trying to think of something sequined that I would NOT wear…….I’ll have to get back to you on that!

Here, I’ve kept the same faux leather pants, added a pair of dressy pumps and a glittery handbag. I chose a rose gold sequined top and again topped off the look with the coat and BOOM- out the door ready.

A Few Tips

The sky is the limit when deciding what to wear to holiday parties, but be sure you feel comfortable in whatever you wear. Confidence is the most beautiful thing you can exude.

If it’s REALLY cold where you are, don’t hesitate to add a base layer (silk is the best– you heard it here first) under your outfit and some great thin Women’s Smartwool Knee High Socks if your outfit allows.

Beautiful statement coats and handbags are a great item to pick up at thrift stores. I have raided my mom’s closet on more than one occasion and come up with gorgeous coats and handbags!

Don’t forget about gloves. This is the perfect excuse to wear some amazing, formal gloves. They step up your look as well as add another layer of warmth while you are getting from the car to the party.

Lauretta, thanks so much! Glad it was inspiring! We live in Colorado so it’s the opposite of anything formal- people LOVE their outdoor performance wear (and so do I). But I LOVE this time of year for an excuse to glam it up a bit! Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

I love your outfit! You look absolutely beautiful! I have several fur coats collected over the years and hardly ever wear them. I have to get them out soon and give them a wirl! I hope you have the happiest of holidays!

Thank you Cheryl! Yes! I would imaging Idaho is similar to Colorado in that it’s not very formal and much more “outdoorsy”- which I LOVE. However, at this time of year I make every excuse to pull out all the glitter and faux fur I’ve got! šŸ˜€ Hope you have an amazing Christmas! Thanks so much for reading and commenting.
